Horsetail/Ponytail/Triple Falls

Located just east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area is a moderately difficult hike that takes you to three waterfalls in less than 3 miles, while passing moss-covered stones, fern-laden hillsides and under canopies of trees. First stop is the 176 foot Horsetail Falls, a neighbor of Oneonta Falls. The shape of the falls and the rounded rockface over which it flows cause it to resemble a horse's tail. The name "Horsetail Falls" has been used since Pioneer days.

After you start the trail from Horsetail Falls the trail amazingly takes you behind the 80-foot Ponytail Falls (alias Upper Horsetail Falls). The lava flow that created this falls' stony lip also buried a layer of soft soil. The falls have washed out the underlying soil, creating the cavern.

The trail then passes a few scenic viewpoints overlooking the Gorge before continuing into Oneonta Canyon. Beyond Ponytail Falls 0.4 mile take a right-hand fork for a quick viewpoint loop out to a cliff edge high above the highway. The view extends up the Columbia to Beacon Rock, but hike with caution as this viewpoint edge is unfenced!

Then continue on the main trail another 0.4 mile, switchback down to a dramatic metal footbridge above 60-foot Oneonta Falls, and climb to a junction with the Oneonta Trail.

Or if you are up for a challenge, turn left and hike up to view the 120 foot Triple Falls. I recommend you take the strenuous (for me anyway) hike since you have already come this far. The breathtaking view is worth it!

Directions: The Horsetail Falls trailhead is just 30 miles east of Portland on the Columbia River Scenic Highway. From Portland Drive 35 miles east on I84 to Exit 3/Ainsworth State Park exit, then go west on the Scenic Highway to Horsetail Falls. Park on the north side of the freeway.
